There are a lot of downsides when it comes to seafood allergies. The major downside is the fact that they actually worsen over time, especially when you do not do anything to deal with them effectively. Another fact to remember is that these allergies tend to stay with you for the whole of your life. Moreover, if you are allergic to a particular group of seafood, then you should also avoid other seafood items belonging to that group.
In the case of shrimps, which belong to the group of crustaceans, you should then avoid consuming other crustaceans as well. This is because the mere fact that you are allergic to shrimps is already a strong indication that you are allergic to other crustaceans as well. Aside from shrimps, you should then be on the lookout for crabs, prawns, and lobsters. The chance that you are also allergic to other crustaceans is pegged at around 50% to 75%. So, there is that very slight chance that you are not allergic to other crustaceans. However, you should still be ready with anti-allergy medications if you do want to try consuming other crustaceans for trial and error.
There are a number of symptoms that can manifest when a shrimp allergy occurs. The typical ones include breathing problems, dizziness, ringing in the ears, headache, light headedness, nausea, and either a rise or fall in the blood pressure of the afflicted person.
If you do want to try out a particular crustacean for the first time, then the wise thing to do here is to consume just a little. Do not consume a lot right away because you still have to determine if you are indeed safe from an allergic reaction breaking out. Usually, the symptoms of an allergic reaction would manifest themselves in just a matter of hours after consumption. If no symptoms occur, then you are safe. However, if any of the aforementioned symptoms occur, stop consuming the crustacean and seek medical assistance right away.
Knowing the basics on shrimp allergy is very important because the symptoms can be fatal if unattended. Thus, it is always better to be informed about this type of contact allergy.
