Sulfa Allergy

There are so many people who are allergic to so many substances. However, one of the rare allergies would be sulfa allergy. In fact, not too many people are actually aware that this type of allergy exists. Still, it pays attention to be informed about this allergy type and its symptoms.

A person afflicted with sulfa allergy is actually allergic to a certain family of drugs called sulfonamides. There are two types here, which are antibiotic and non-antibiotic. For the most part, people are allergic to sulfa antibiotics.

This type of allergy is actually very rare, with roughly just three out of a hundred people affected. Moreover, people who have certain health problems involving their immune system are the ones who are most likely affected with this type of allergy. Once a sulfa allergic reaction occurs, this would actually affect the skin. Rashes, hives, and photosensitivity are common symptoms accompanying sulfa allergy. The more severe reactions, however, include what is known as the Stevens – Johnson syndrome. This is a very serious case because it can be fatal in nature.

People suffering from sulfa allergy are also at risk of kidney and liver damage. Because of the adversity of the allergic reaction here, some people tend to develop hepatitis. What’s even worse is the fact that once hepatitis sets in and becomes severe; this can eventually lead to kidney failure. Blood problems are also very common in people afflicted with sulfa allergy. Depending on the severity of the condition here, this type of allergic reaction can reduce both red and white blood cells, and even the platelets. Significant reduction of any of the components of blood can lead to so many health problems or disorders. Plus, if you are asthmatic, being allergic to sulfonamides can actually worsen your asthma problem. The allergic reaction can even bring about symptoms that resemble those of pneumonia. The allergic reaction actually triggers the lungs, which is why these symptoms occur.

If you suspect yourself to be afflicted with sulfa allergy, you should not hesitate to consult your physician right away. This is because coming up with an accurate diagnosis for this type of allergy is not as easy at all. Other allergy types can be diagnosed with the typical blood or skin test. Such is not the case with sulfa allergy at all. Its diagnosis solely depends on the symptoms being manifested by the patient. Thus, it is a must to seek medical assistance right away.
